The History of St. Bartholomew's
By Abigail Plemmons
St. Bartholomew’s History Timeline started as an idea in the spring of 2010, to learn as much as possible about the history of our church in preparation for teaching a summer history class to our youth group. Little did I know this one simple idea would lead to such a huge project!
I began gathering information, spending untold hours in the local library looking through old newspaper articles dating back to the 1950s, many on microfilm. It was through these articles, original church papers, old photo albums and discussions with church members and clergy that the project began to take shape.
Then at our Thanksgiving PotLuck in Nov. 2010, we began to turn it into a living timeline with many people contributing their memories.
Many thanks to everyone in the St. Bart’s comm-
unity for sharing their stories and information.
A special thank you must go to Molly Alexander, Kip West, and Mike Atkin. Molly found a treasure trove of information in a box in the shed, containing original letters from the 1950s and 60s as the church was first formed and the buildings were built. Kip, who never threw out anything she felt could be important, shared
original parish newsletters and church bulletins, that helped fill in gaps in the timeline. And Mike, for his great picture taking skills and website management, all of it amazing!
All these elements have been incorporated into this digital timeline as a living history of our faith community at St. Bartholomew’s.
By no means is this timeline finished, this is just the beginning, if you have a story to share, information to impart, or just want to learn about the history of our church, please feel free to contact me.
